move that's also unprecedented. governor jerry brown has directed the california air reboersz boar resources board to allow the immediate production of the winter blend of gasoline. this should immediately increase the supply of gasoline and in theory lower the prices that you are paying at the pump. we're at the 76 station here in cupertino. this is an extreme. they're charging $5.39 for a regular gallon of gas. you can go elsewhere and find it cheaper, but it's still very expensive. here are the latest numbers from aaa overnight. an average gallon of gas in the bay area is around $4.70. if you were to look at those prices and compare them to a week ago, that's a jump of 46 to 47 cents in just seven days. now, usually california doesn't switch to this winter blend until october 31st. the downside of switching early is the blend is not as friend leto the environment. >> the winter blend of gasoline is a very similar type of gasoline that doesn't have as stringent air pollution requirements. with summer months, a cleaner version is necessary to reduce ozone when possible. winter gas

california tomorrow. yesterday was just another warm, dry day. word of breaking records in many areas for how dry it's been over the last 0 days, 90 days, since the middle of the summer. another warm day in the desert southwest. you can see the spinning motion of the upper level low. 's inching its way towards the los angeles area. a few showers with it offshore and a couple sprinkles around south of san francisco. that's about it. another dry day in the northwest. but you're running out of them. pretty soon we're going to return to your typical pattern of a lot of clouds and on-and-off showers over the next week. here is a look at the radar off the california coastline. in san francisco, showers were just to the south of you, now heading off to the coast. today is a relatively dry day in many areas. tomorrow is when the upper level low comes near los angeles. that's where we've got a chance of showers. if the air is cold enough in the afternoon, we may get a few thunderstorms out of that and then it should clear out for a nice weekend. today, very similar to yesterday with a sun and cloud mi

at home for joining us. we are broadcasting not from new york, but from california. i did a book event in santa barbara yesterday for my book "drift." i spoke to a room of about 2,000 people, which is unnerving if. you're not used to doing that sort of thing. and i talked about my book. i got asked a question at this event about the political impact of the first presidential debate. and the way it went seems to be important in understanding the temperature of the country on the presidential race right now. most everybody agrees that the first debate was won quite handedly by the republican challenger mitt romney and lost very much by president obama. but yesterday in santa barbara, i told this giant room full of people in this theater when asked about this subject that as clearly and as cleanly as mr. romney won the the debate, it still seems politically important that mr. romney did not win the debate in a way that produced a single sound bite. i mean, yeah, 60 million people watched romney win the debate overall, but for the 240 or so million american who is did not watch the debate
